Integrated Guide on NDIS Eligibility Criteria: Answers All Your Confusion
Know About NDIS Before Knowing The NDIS Eligibility Criteria
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-supported program in Australia that offers funding and assistance to eligible individuals with disabilities. This helps people with disabilities to increase their independence, spend more time with family and friends, expand their social connections, access new employment opportunities, and overall, improve their quality of life.
The NDIS registered support partners are an extension of the NDIS system. In simple terms, the NDIS connects needy individuals to such support partners, along with connecting them with doctors, community help groups, schools, etc. District 360 is one such registered NDIS support provider that offers disability support in Melbourne.
NDIS Eligibility Criteria: A Simple Checklist
Here’s a simple NDIS eligibility criteria checklist for you!
If you think you fulfill all the points in this NDIS eligibility checklist, a local support coordinator can help you understand everything about NDIS, what to do, how to apply for the NDIS fund, and what’s next. In this regard, you can contact District 360, if you’re from Melbourne.
1. NDIS Age Requirements
If you are between the ages of 9 and 65, you have completed the first NDIS eligibility checklist. If your child is under 9 years old, they may be eligible for the "early childhood approach." Children older than 9 are supported through local area coordination partners. Children under 9 are supported through the NDIS sub-extension called the "early childhood approach."
If you’re older than 65, then you might have access to some other support plans like the ‘Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) Program’ or other similar programs, but not the NDIS support programs.
2. NDIS Residence Requirements
If you are an Australian citizen, a permanent visa holder, or fall under the protected special category of visa holders, then you have completed the second NDIS eligibility checklist.
3. NDIS Disability Requirements
If you have a disability that is supported by permanent impairment, then you have completed the third NDIS eligibility checklist. Permanent impairment can involve neurological, intellectual, psychological, sensory, cognitive, or physical impairment. More information about disability requirements, including what constitutes permanent impairment and other important factors that fall under the NDIS eligibility criteria, has been discussed in this blog.
4. NDIS Early Intervention Requirements
If you require immediate assistance to prevent or reduce your future support needs, or if you need help to ensure that your family has the expertise to provide necessary assistance to you due to your disability, then you are eligible for NDIS support.
Access the following weblink to apply for NDIS support on early intervention or other support services
NDIS Early Intervention Requirements
An individual can be qualified for NDIS access, irrespective of the fact whether their impairment has been caused by:
Birth
Disease
Injury
Accident
Examples of medical conditions leading to permanent or semi-permanent impairments that make an individual eligible for NDIS requirements:
List A Medical Conditions: Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Angelman syndrome, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, Mucopolysaccharidoses, Spinal Muscular Atrophies, Deafblindness, etc.
List B Medical Conditions: Asperger Syndrome, Dandy-Walker Syndrome, Velocardiofacial Syndrome, Atypical Autism, Tuberous Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, etc.
Contact District 360 to know more about the medical conditions that would qualify you for NDIS funds and support.
Note:
Please note that NDIS does not provide support for time-limited medical conditions like lower limb fractures causing temporary difficulty with mobility or ligament tears of upper arms of the same kind. It is equally important to note that NDIS does not provide funds for even chronic diseases that won’t amount to disability. For example, a patient suffering from heart disease won’t be funded, but an individual who got his leg amputated due to diabetes might be funded. To know more contact District 360.
Psychosocial disability can result from mental health conditions. Those who experience this may face severe effects and social disadvantages. Individuals with a permanent disability may qualify for NDIS support. For more guidance on this, look out for the blog 'What is a Psychosocial Recovery Coach? NDIS Eligibility Criteria Based On Disability Requirements
The NDIS disability requirements are met based on the following criteria:
Disability caused by impairment.
Impairment is likely permanent.
Impairments substantially reduce functional capacities such as mobility, communication, etc.
Impairments hinder work, studies, and social life.
Full dependence on NDIS for support throughout life.
What is Impairment According to NDIS?
According to NDIS, “An impairment is a loss or significant change in at least one of:
your body’s functions
your body structure
how you think and learn”.
Disclaimer: If your impairment is permanent, you are eligible for lifelong NDIS support. However, if your likely permanent impairment improves over time, NDIS can reassess your plan. If that happens, your support provider will notify you.

NDIS Eligibility Criteria Based On NDIS Disability Test
As mentioned earlier, the NDIS eligibility criteria test involves reviewing an applicant's information based on his/her age, residence, disability, and early intervention requirements. Upon approval, the person becomes eligible for NDIS support and funds. The review process usually takes 21 days. Quicker decisions can be made based on the urgency of the case.
Information required for the NDIS Eligibility Test:
Evidence of Disability
Financial Information
Details of Care Network
Personal Information
Residence Proof
Additional Information (as asked by the NDIS)
If the applicant does not respond effectively to the application within 90 days, the application may be terminated. Once the necessary information is received, a decision will be made within 14 days. Failing to make a decision within this period will result in the decision being nullified and may be subject to a review.
